The tournament comes as a celebration for the release of the game!
Talon Esports, a Hong Kong based esports organisation, earlier this week, unveiled the Hong Kong stage of the Wild Rift SEA Icon Series tournament to celebrate the release of the game in the SEA region. The tournament title sponsor will be Mox Bank, with telecommunications company CSL Mobile and Hong Kong Cyberport as partners, according to the official announcement.
With a total of 64 competing teams, the tournament is set to begin on May 1st 2021 and will conclude on June 20th 2021. The top four teams from the group stage will qualify for the finals which may be held offline depending on local COVID-19 restrictions. The total prize pool for the tournament is over 200,000 HKD (Around £18,500) and the winner will get the biggest share.
Sean Zhang, CEO and Co-Founder of Talon Esports, spoke on the news in a release: “With an ever-growing mobile esports player base and audience within Asia-Pacific, we are honoured to work with Riot Games to launch official esports tournaments in Hong Kong and the region.”
The Wild Rift SEA Icon Series is said to be the first Wild Rift tournament produced by Riot Games Southeast Asia in the region. In December 2020, it was revealed that tournament organiser ESL had been appointed by Riot Games to operate Wild Rift tournaments in Malaysia and Thailand for the entirety of 2021.
Bruce Lam, Managing Director of Consumer Mobile at CSL Mobile, added: “CSL Mobile is dedicated to promoting competitive esports in Hong Kong. We hope to provide CSL’s 5G mobile network to gamers through our partnership with Talon Esports and Riot Games, as well as nurture elite players that can represent Hong Kong in the international arena.”
